Description | This stunning arched top Victorian figurative oil painting is by noted Belgian artist Charles Soubre. It was painted in 1853 and is signed and date lower right. The composition is a complex figurative work that Soubre was so at ease with painting. The story behind the art work is the blessing of the harvest with a central figure performing the rite and numerous figures gathered around him. In the background are some other figures still working on the harvest. Soubre has depicted fantastic detail in the workers faces and their unique postures of reverence. It is a colourful, vibrant luminous Victorian oil painting and an excellent example of Soubre's work. Signed 'Chs Soubre' and dated 1853 lower right. |

Biography | Charles Soubre (1821 -1895) was born and died in Liege, Belgium. He was a painter of historical scenes, genre scenes, figures, portraits and landscapes. Soubre was a pupil of J. Barthelemy Viellevoye at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Liege. He was also an architect by profession. From 1893-1895 he exhibited at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liege. |
