Gordon Crosby (1885-1943).

Mullion Cove Cornwall.

This beautiful and impressive Royal Academy exhibited British Impressionist landscape oil painting is by noted artist Frederick Gordon Crosby. It was painted and exhibited in 1921 and depicts Mullion Cove and its harbour in Cornwall. Mullion Cove is situated on the west coast of the Lizard Peninsula and is a small sandy beach, mostly covered at high tide, beside the historic lifeboat station and picturesque Mullion harbour. The cove is now looked after by the National Trust and the photograph of the harbour on their website is from a very similar angle to our painting and largely unchanged. Although Crosby is best known for his automobile illustrations he was also a very talented landscape painter, painting in the Scottish highlands and in Cornwall.  Two of his three Royal Academy exhibits were of coastal landscapes, of Lelant, exhibited in 1917 and Mullion Cove in 1921, both in Cornwall. Spending time in the West Country, Crosby may well have had connections to the Newlyn School artists in Cornwall, several of whom came from the West Midlands. The painting is a superb marine oil painting of Mullion harbour and vessels in the foreground with figures on the harbour wall. Beyond is the vast range of cliffs, the sea breaking against the rocks and seagulls wheeling over head.  The rich palette of blues and greens has the wonderful Cornish School hues and the brushwork is superb. This is a fantastic example of Crosby's work, painted for the sheer enjoyment of painting and was no doubt well received at the Royal Academy in 1921.

Annie Swynnerton - Millicent Fawcett - Richard Taylor Fine Art WEBAnnie Louisa Swynnerton - Portrait of Suffragist Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett.

This painting has now found its forever home in the Parliament Art Collection at the Palace of Westminster, London.

This superb British late 19th century portrait oil painting is by noted and well exhibited Victorian born female artist Annie Louisa Swynnerton. The portrait is of Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett (1847-1929). A statue commemorating the life of the suffragist, Millicent Fawcett, was unveiled opposite Parliament in London, March 2021. She campaigned for women's right to vote during the early 20th Century and is seen as one of the most influential feminists of the past 100 years. The bronze casting, by the artist Gillian Wearing, is the first statue of a woman erected in Parliament Square. Swynnerton's portrait of Fawcett demonstrates her connection to key figures in the Women's Movement. In this painting Fawcett wears the robes of the University of St Andrews, the institution that awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in Law (LLD) for services to education in 1899. It is likely this painting was to commemorate this occasion. There is a another similar version of this painting in the book on Annie Swynnerton which is owned by the Tate Gallery. Swynnerton's faithfulness to her middle aged sitter's appearance is demonstrated here, as she clearly shows the well earned lines on Fawcett's face. It is a superb portrait by a Victorian female artist of one of the most influential feminists in Great Britain's history.

Stanza Youth Culture at Manchester Light WavesStanza_-Youth_Culture_-_MediaCityUK

Stanza  - Youth Culture is on display at Light Waves Salford Quays MediaCityUK from 7th -16th December. Richard Taylor Fine Art had gone to see the commissioned Youth Culture statue by Stanza - whose abstract oils/city mapping paintings we have on our website and online galleries. The statue is a huge imposing figure of youth in a hoodie, based on his daughter. It is iluminated through feeds of data and information flows and changes colour spectacularly. At the VIP event talk by the main curator, Stanza's work was hailed as the highlight of the show and very well received, literally head and shoulders above the others as you can see below and it will now go on tour.

Welcome to another news page at Richard Taylor Fine Art.

So what have we been up to lately? Well we recently had a day trip to Manchester Art Gallery to see the wonderful Annie Louisa Swynnerton exhibition as we have two of our paintings on loan to them for this year's exhibition. Jebsa - Roma Lady - Swynnerton's first known oil painting, painted in 1874 and The Debutante painted in 1891. The portrait is believed to be Elizabeth 'Elsie' Ebsworth who became a prominent society hostess and unusually for her class, a singer. She was later painted by Singer Sargent and Sickert.

Swynnerton (1844-1933) was a 19th century Victorian artist and active in the women's suffrage movement. She was elected the first female associate member of the Royal Academy in 1922 aged 78 which prompted a retrospective of her work at the Manchester Art Gallery in 1923, ensuring her legacy. It was a good experience to see our paintings in the museum context as part of the exhibition. If you would like to see the exhibition it runs until January 6th, is free and is well worth a visit.
