Description | This simply stunning large religious Old Master oil painting is attributed to circle of Peter Paul Rubens. Painted circa 1640 on panel it is a colourful religious story unfolding before our eyes. Saint Elizabeth, explained below, is visiting the Virgin Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus with her own miraculous son, John the Baptist. The brushwork and colouring on a painting over 400 years old is still superb. A really lovely religious Old Master oil painting. Saint Elizabeth, older cousin to the Virgin Mary, became pregnant after her husband Zacharias prayed for a child. (Zacharias was skeptical their prayers had been answered as they were elderly. For this he was rendered mute until he later named the child John. This was considered an unusual choice, but the will of God and at this his speech returned). The child was in fact John the Baptist who would later baptise Christ. |

Biography | Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a Flemish artist. He is considered the most influential artist of Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens's highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, colour, and sensuality, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation. |
