Title | Portrait of a Soldier |
Description | This interesting British Victorian military portrait is by artist C Marten. Painted in 1897 it is a three quarter length portrait of a soldier by a brick wall and window with bars. The soldier or infantryman is resting both hands on the handle of his sword in a relaxed posture, one un-gloved. He is dressed in black with two crossed swords emblems on the forearm of his black jacket. His trousers have a double silver stripe. His hat, at a jaunty angle with elastic under his chin, is, we believe, a forage cap with a wide gold brocade with a woven oak leaf design. There is probably a gold wire embroidered button on the top and floral decoration. The detail in his face is charming and the whole portrait has an interesting feel to it. We would welcome more information if anyone recognises the uniform. Signed and dated 1897. |
