Title |
Shepherd with Animals and Riders in a Landscape |
Description |
This superb Dutch Old Master oil painting is attributed to Pieter Bodding van Laer. Painted circa 1635 during the Dutch Gokden Age the composition depicts a number of figures and animals in an Italian lake landscape with some buildings beyond. The figures consist of a couple and their cows and goats settled around them. The man is on his feet talking to three riders passing by with a couple more in the distance. The morning light is ascending and the scene is beautifully illuminated, the light especially catching the animals in the foreground and the blue lake beyond. The detail and brushwork, especially on the animals is superb. This is a fine example of 17th century Dutch art and a charming composition.
