Description An original Victorian oil painting by John James WIlson who, like his father, became a noted marine artist but who also painted these beautiful landscapes. This oil on panel was painted circa 1848 and is signed JJ Wilson lower left. It depicts a mother and a child by the river with their cottage in the distance. The light sky and azure blue contrast well with the deep greens of the large tree and the reflections from the stream. A very decent oil on panel with gallery provenance and a great example the 19th century British landscape oil.

Biography John James Wilson (1815-1875) - born in London, Wilson was the son and pupil of the well known marine artist, John (Jock) Wilson, RSA (1774-1855). Perhaps as a reaction to his father's tuition, John James Wilson's did not paint any marine subjects before 1849. However, in later life his attitude and interests changed and after 1849 he painted little else.

John James Wilson exhibited at all of the major London Galleries. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835 and at the British Institute in 1834. He also exhibited a large number of pictures at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He finally ceased showing his work in public two years prior to his death in 1873. Examples of John James Wilson's work can be seen at several major British Museums including: the Folkestone Art Gallery, the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and the ; Art Gallery.
