Description | An original Impressionist watercolour by Scottish artist Hans Hansen circa 1900. The work depicts an Edwardian evening scene on the Thames at Henley Regatta with a large number of boats with their passengers enjoying the fireworks overhead. The use of white paint to highlight the people is typical of Hansen’s work. A striking painting and an excellent example of Hansen’s work with good provenance. Biography | Hans Jacob Hansen (1853-1947) RSW 1906-13. Hansen was born in Leith, Edinburgh, the son of a merchant and shipbroker. Hansen was brought up in Edinburgh where he studied art under R.B Nisbet and J Ross, developing a style superficially similar to Melville. He worked extensively abroad in the Middle East, North Africa and Spain visiting Russia in the 1870’s. Exhibited RA 1891-1918. He died in 1947. |
