Artist Name Helen Wingate (1886-1954)
Title Portrait of a Girl in Pink
Description
This lovely Scottish Colourist portrait oil painting is by noted Scottish female artist Helen Ainslie Wingate. She was the daughter of Sir Charles Lawton Wingate who was president of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1919. It was exhibited at the Scottish Society of Women Artists and bears a label verso where it is entitled Girl in Pink but not dated. It was probably painted circa 1920 when Wingate painted and exhibited several portraits. The painting is a half length portrait of a young girl in a pink dress with cream collar and cuffs and black belt. She is leaning against the bough of a tree  with grass beyond. Her dark hair is tied back in two plaits with black ribbon and her deep blue eyes are gazing at the artist/viewer. The palette of pink against the green is  very vibrant and the pose is natural and relaxed.  This a lovely painting by a noted Scottish female artist and is a good example of Scottish Colourists.
