This superb Dutch Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to circle of Nicolaes Maes. Painted circa 1670, the painting is of a lady, sat by a classical fountain with statue and column, her hand held out to the water. She is wearing a vibrant gold dress and her shawl has dropped from one shoulder as if she may be about to bathe. She is looking at the artist/viewer and smiling slightly. beyond her are trees and a landscape. This is a very beguiling and intimate portrait, with superb detail and brushwork and an excellent example of Dutch Old Master art. |

Biography |
Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693) was a Dutch painter known for his genre scenes, portraits, religious compositions and the occasional still life. A pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, he returned to work in his native city of Dordrecht for 20 years. In the latter part of his career he returned to Amsterdam where he became the leading portrait painter of his time. Maes contributed to the development of genre painting in the Netherlands and was the most prominent portrait painter working in Amsterdam in the final three decades of the 17th century. |
