Description | This superb Victorian portrait oil painting is by noted American/British artist Dewey Bates. Painted in 1879 the painting is believed to be a self portrait of the artist, aged about 28 and may be the interior of his abode at Red Lion Square, Holborn, London. It is a seated portrait of Bates smoking a pipe with an array of books on a bookshelf on the wall. The brush work and muted palette of greens and browns is lovely, throwing the focus onto his facial features as he gazes steadfastly at the viewer. A highly accomplished self portrait of a talented and well exhibited artist. Signed and dated 1879 centre left of sitter. |

Biography | Dewy Bates (1851-1899). Landscape and figure and portrait painter, Born in Philadelphia USA but living in London in the 1880's including at Red Lion Square in London. He then moved to Berkshire in 1886 and lived in the Rye area of Sussex in the 1890s. He painted several scenes of Rye and the vicinity and lived firstly in a cottage at East Guldford and latterly at Lucknow Place, where he was living when he died in 1898.
