Description This superb British Regency Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed to the circle of Sir Henry Raeburn. Painted circa 1800, it is a three quarter length portrait of a seated gentleman. He has a carnation in his button hole and is holding a pen and paper. Perhaps he is about to write a letter, or a poem or perhaps it is indicating that he is a man of learning. There is great sympathetic detail in his face which is beautifully illuminated. A charming painting by a very talented artist.

Frame Housed in a fine gilt late 18th century frame, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.

Biography Sir Henry Raeburn FRSE RA RSA  (1756-1823) was a British portrait painter and Scotland's first significant portrait painter since the Union to remain based in Scotland. He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland.
