This superb Flemish 17th century religious Old Master oil painting on panel is attributed to an artist from the Flemish School. Painted circa 1680 the subject matter is one well known to European art, The Lamentation - the mourning of Christ. In the centre foreground, Christ's body is held by St John the Baptist whilst his mother, the Virgin Mary helps to support and cover him and looks totally heartbroken. Mary Magdalen, who is sometimes depicted washing Christ's feet with her red hair, is bending over the body behind the Virgin Mary. Other mourners are to the right and behind and beyond them are trees and a landscape. It is a very intimate scene of love and grief and one can't help be moved by the expressions of both on the main characters' faces. This is an excellent 17th century religious Old Master depicting a famous religious moment and is perfectly captured. |
