Title | Portrait of Margaret Parker (nee Rainy) 1774-1844 |
Description | This very impressive British 18th century Old Master oil portrait is attributed to Henry Raeburn. Painted in 1799 the sitter is Margaret Parker (Nee Rainy) of Perthshire, Scotland (1774-1844) and she would have been 25 in our painting. The half length portrait painting is part of a pair with her husband, Charles Stewart Parker. The sitter is seated with an elaborate landscape view beyond. She is dressed in a white gown with a beautifully detailed frill around the neck. As sleeves became shorter, gloves became longer to fill the gap. Our sitter is wearing only one glove and holding the other, thus showing the delicate beauty of her unblemished skin in quite an intimate pose. There is tremendous sensitive detail in the portrayal of her face, similar to Raeburn's other works. Margaret was daughter of Rev'd George Rainy and Anne Rainy and wife of Charles Stewart Parker. She was Mother of seven children; Charles Stewart Parker; Vice Chancellor Sir James Parker; Susan Darroch; George Parker; Margaret Parker and 2 others. Margaret was sister of Christina Tennent; Isabella Rainy; Gilbert Rainy; Anne Rainy; George Rainy and one other. |
