Title | Portrait of The Marsh King's Daughter |
Description | This superb British Victorian exhibited portrait oil painting is by noted artist John Scott. It was painted in 1884 and exhibited at the Royal Academy London the same year, entitled An Incident from The Marsh King's Daughter with a quote from the Hans Christian Andersen book, The Marsh King's Daughter. (see details regarding the story below). In the large and vibrant composition, Helga, wearing a long lime green dress, sits by a lily pond in the foreground, leaning against a tree stump. To her left are a number of large storks that look as if they are communing with her. Beyond are trees and the sky line. The painting has a magical feel to it and is painted with great sensitivity and detail. The brushwork and colouring are superb. This is a wonderful example of Victorian exhibited art and John Scott's skill as a 19th century British artist in rendering this enchanting story. Signed and dated lower right. |
