Artist Name |
Guido Reni (1575-1642) |
Title |
Mary Magdalene with Book and Skull |
Description |
This stunning Old Master 17th century Italian Baroque School religious portrait oil painting is of Mary Magdalene. It is also a Memento mori, a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A memento mori painting would often contain a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hour glasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers. In our painting Mary Magdalene is resting a book against the skull and looking to the heavens. The painting which is attributed to circle Guido Reni has used considerable skill to detail her flowing hair and the lushness of her grey gown. A real Old Master gem of a painting that wouldn't look out of place in a museum. |
