| Biography | Germain Fabius Brest (1823-1900). French 19th century Brest was born and died in Marseilles. Similar to Corot and Delacroix in style, he was a painter of scenes with figures, landscapes and Orientalism. He was a pupil of Emile Loubon in Marseilles then of Troyon in Paris. Brest exhibited in the Paris Salon from 1851-1896. From 1855 he spent four years in Turkey. He rendered the atmosphere of Cafes, street and port scenes with rich detail. His balanced compositions are often dominated by architecture, particularly more classical views of Venice and the midi which he painted mainly between 1860- 1870. His Orientalist paintings are in public collections such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille and Musée des beaux-arts de Béziers. He would often paint capriccios, making locations hard to determine. |
