| Description | This charming exhibited Edwardian figurative interior oil painting is by British female artist Alice Elfrida Manly. Manly had a long artistic career and exhibited over almost 40 years. This lovely painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1905. Entitled The Goblin Story, a young mother is telling her two young daughters a story by the fire side, their dog listening in too. She holds a finger up to them in warning! There is wonderful detail - in the lace on their gowns down to the smoke gently rising from the fire. A really enchanting painting with touching domesticity. Signed lower left. |

| Biography | Alice Elfrida Manly (1846-1932). Like her sister, Eleanor Eliza Manly, she attended the Female School of Art, Queen Square, 1862-63 before going on to further her studies at the South Kensington Schools where she taught as an assistant. She exhibited extensively for almost 40 years between 1880-1917. Exhibited: Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham 10, Dudley Gallery and New Dudley Gallery 56, Walker Gallery Liverpool 6, Manchester City Gallery 5, Royal Academy 16, Royal Society of British Artists 2, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour 5, Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1, Society of Women Artists 16. |
