Description | Painted in 1909 this oil on canvas landscape painting is by James Wallace. He was a Berwick Northumberland based artist who later lived in London and Scotland. A gallery or exhibited work, it still retains the label verso. This is an early twentieth century example of British Impressionism. The scene depicts a working horse and cart by the postmill at Wrawby in Lincolnshire. "Constructed in 1760, the mill originally had common (cloth-in-hand) sails which have now disappeared. The mill has had several owners over the years and was a working mill until the late 1940s when it fell into disuse. It was restored in 1965 and is now the last surviving postmill in the north of England" It is signed lower left Jas Wallace and dated 1909 with artists label verso. |
