| Description | This superb Royal Academy exhibited portrait oil painting is by British artist James Cleaver ARCA. It was painted in 1937 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1939 entitled 'Caroline and her Puppets'. It is a three quarter length portrait of a woman, Caroline, dangling a puppet or marionette in front of her. On a shelf behind her sit three more puppets and Caroline confidently gazes at the viewer/artist. There is lovely detail and colouring in her facial features and hair. Cleaver may have had some connection to the theatrical world as several of his paintings are behind the scenes at the theatre. This is a great example of his work and an exhibited piece. Signed and dated lower left. |
