Huggins was primarily known for his studies of animals - lions, horses, donkeys, poultry, etc, and was also known to depict them within historical scenes, such as David in the Lion's Den and Una and the Lion. He developed a very individual technique painting pale, transparent colours over a white background. In 1861 he moved to Chester, and in 1876 took a house at Betws-y-Coed, Wales. He later returned to Chester, where he died in 1884.
