Alexander Coutts Fraser (fl1886-1939). Born in Aberdeen, Fraser was a painter in oils of portraits, figure study, landscapes and genre; also an engraver. He trained at the Glasgow School of Art, becoming its Head 1914-1934. He also trained in London and Paris. Most of his landscape were of coastal and pastoral subjects. In his earlier work the paint was handled smoothly but he later roughened the texture of the canvases and his treatment of impasto gives his latest works a luminosity which made them quite distinctive. He maintained a studio at 214 Union Street. Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy 30 between 1992-1912, Glasgow Institute 37, Liverpool 6, and the Aberdeen Artists Society. Represented in Aberdeen and Glasgow art galleries. |
