George Carr Drinkwater (1880-1941)

George Carr Drinkwater (1880-1941) was an architect, portrait and figure painter. He was educated at the Dragon School, Oxford, followed by Rugby and then Wadham College Oxford where he rowed in the Oxford eight in the University Boat Race in 1902 and 1903. He fought in the Boer War and the First World War and was award the Queens Medal and the Military Cross (MC) and was twice mentioned in dispatches. In civilian life he was a portrait painter and architect, rowing correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and author (with Terence Sanders) of The University Boat Race Official centenary history, 1829 1929. In 1914 he married Carmen Hill, a singer active in London during the early 1900s. They lived at 8 Warwick Avenue, London and had one son, John. He died in 1941 aged 60 through enemy action.
