Lionel Ellis (1903-1988)
Lionel Ellis ARCA (1903-1988) was an important twentieth-century painter, illustrator, engraver and teacher who specialised in portraits, as well as equestrian and floral subjects. He studied at the Plymouth school of Art 1918-22 and Royal College of Art 1922-25 and won a travelling scholarship in 1925 travelling to Colarossi's, Paris, Florence and Rome. He taught at Wimbledon School of Art between 1937 and 1968 and lived in Headley, Surrey. His partner was fellow artist Barbara Shaw. His work is held at the V&A Museum, the British Museum and provincial museums. He exhibited 1927-33. New English Art Club 3, Redfern Gallery 45.
