Title | Family Portrait in Market |
Description | This charming early twentieth century Post Impressionist portrait oil painting is by British Jewish female artist Amy Julia Drucker. Of German descent, Drucker was born in England in 1873. In the foreground of the painting is a portrait of a tight knit family group of a mother and father and five young children. Their gaze and focus is on each other rather than their surrounds. They are in a covered market with vegetable stalls and numerous figures beyond. The London skyline can be seen through the market windows. Although painted in a muted palette, the family stand out in their reds and blues and there is the vivid green of vegetables on a stall. The market is believed to be Whitechapel - Marchment Street. This painting is a real conversation piece as one imagines who the little family are and their circumstances. A charming painting by a talented British Jewish female artist. A similar later variant titled For He Had Great Possessions is with the Ben Uri Gallery. Signed lower right. |
