Description | A large work by one of Scotland’s most famous artists of the 19th century. In good condition, it is a fine example of his work and was painted in 1880. The light airy palette and panoramic landscape and seascapes are what made him famous - and this is a fine example of his work. The pink and sky blue colouring of the sea are particularly appealing. It is fresh and vibrant and a good large size. This should be in the National Gallery of Scotland - it is that good! Biography | William McTaggart RSA (1835-1910) (b. Aros, Laggan of Kintyre, Argyllshire, 25 Oct. 1835; d. Broomieknowe, nr. Edinburgh, 2 Apr. 1910). The leading Scottish landscape painter of his period. He has been called ‘the Scottish Impressionist’, but although he was much concerned with light and atmosphere, the sense of the drama of nature in his work brings him closer in spirit to Constable. His brushwork was free and fervent and he often depicted rough seas and scudding clouds. He was an influential figure, his followers including his grandson, William MacTaggart (1903–81). |
